It’s no surprise that I’m transfixed by the concept of the man cave, but I want to explain how it relates to Orientalism. I use my painting titled Old Fashioned Man Cave to articulate why I paint fictionalized masculine spaces. Old Fashioned Man Cave by Klaire Lockheart
Did you read Dune (1965) by Frank Herbert? Photographer Aaron C Packard and I chat about this epic sci-fi novel on the fourth episode of Femininity in the Post-Apocalypse podcast! We discuss spice, worms, and Orientalism before rating the book on the Maenad-O-Meter. I’m also pleased to announce that Miss Art World Katherine Cooksey receives her Honorary Doctor of Dystopian Studies Degree!

Before you start painting, drawing, or collaging, it’s a great idea to prime your surface with gesso. I’ll demonstrate the technique I use to prepare canvas for oil painting, but I encourage you to experiment and try out different approaches to priming your surfaces. This tutorial includes directions on gesso application along with advice on drying times. The complete “Gesso Application” video guide is available at the Unaccredited College of Klaire.
